Stop Calling Your Ex “Crazy”
A great man takes responsibility.
It always starts the same way.
You’re on a date. The mood is good. The drinks are hitting the spot. Then, inevitably, the conversation drifts to past relationships.
She asks the question: "So, why did things end with your last girlfriend?"
This is the moment. Right here. This is where most guys blow it.
They lean in, lower their voice, and start the rant.
The Rant
"Man, she was crazy. Totally psycho. She was controlling, she was jealous, she ruined my life."
They think this makes them look like the victim. They think it builds a bond — us against the crazy exes.
But here is what she actually hears:
"I have zero accountability."
When you trash your ex, you are telling the woman sitting across from you that you are the kind of man who blames everyone else for his problems. You’re telling her that you lack the emotional maturity to process a breakup with dignity.
And there is a darker thought creeping into her mind, even if she doesn't say it:
"I wonder what he’s going to say about me in six months."
Because here is the brutal truth: If you date a woman for a year, or two years, or five years, and the sum total of your description of her is "crazy"... then you’re the one who lacks judgment. You chose her. You stayed with her.
A Great Man Takes Responsibility.
That doesn’t mean you have to lie. If the relationship was toxic, you can admit it. But you do it with class. You use what I call the "Dignity Filter."
Instead of saying, "She was a raging bitch," you say, "We just had different communication styles. It got toxic, and I had to walk away for my own peace of mind."
See the difference?
One sounds like a bitter boy. The other sounds like a man who has his act together.
And guys, listen... this is a two-way street.
I’ve been on dates where the girl spends the entire appetizer course telling me how her ex was a narcissist, a cheater, and a loser.
I used to sit there and think, "Wow, those guys were jerks."
Now, I hear that and I check out.
Because a woman who can’t speak about her past without venom is a woman who hasn’t healed. She’s carrying baggage that she wants YOU to carry.
A Matter of Integrity
I don’t care if your ex actually was "crazy." A gentleman keeps his mouth shut about the details. It’s a matter of integrity. You shared a life with that person at some point. Respect the time you spent, even if it ended badly.
So next time the topic comes up, take the high road.
Be brief. Be neutral. And pivot back to the present.
It shows you’re not living in the past. It shows you’re emotionally stable. And most importantly, it shows that you have too much respect for yourself — and for her — to air your dirty laundry in public.
That is the kind of silence that speaks volumes.
